Redirects & URLs

Why does my URL have to start with http:// or https://?

As a redirection service for web pages, url.lol supports the http protocol exclusively.

So I can’t do gopher:// or ftp://?

No, sorry. This is just for web stuff, at least for now. (also, lol @ gopher)

What characters can I use in my redirect?

Pretty much anything except for /, #, %, and spaces. It can’t start with a dot, though you can use dots anywhere else in the string. Multibyte characters are also fine, so you can go to town with your emoji or whatever.

I found a redirect that points to something really inappropriate.

If it violates the Terms of Service, you should send a report with details and I’ll nuke it.

Record Management & Keys

What’s all this about a “key”?

When you create a redirect record, you’re asked to write down a unique key (consisting of four random words) shown on the confirmation screen. The key allows you to unlock access to the record, in case you ever want to update the URL associated with the redirect or modify the data privacy settings. You don’t have to keep the key, but if you lose it, there’s no way to manage the record if you didn’t provide your email address.

What if I’m the kind of person who loses things? Is there an alternative to this key thing?

Yes! You can link your email address with your redirect record, and that will let you access your record without a key (and generate a new key, if needed).

I lost my key. Help?

If you linked your email address, you can still access your redirect record. If you didn’t, there isn’t much that can be done. Keys can’t be recovered since the service doesn’t store your actual key, but instead keeps a cryptographic hash of it. I have no idea what your key is.

So without a key, if I didn’t link my email address, I’m out of luck?

Yeah. If you’re truly desperate you can contact us with information about your situation, but without the key or a valid linked email, it’s nearly impossible to prove that you’re the rightful owner of the record in question.
